To offer economically disadvantaged, minority students nearly full four-year scholarships to private secondary schools in the Buffalo-Niagara region.
To increase the community outreach and diversity of
local private secondary schools
BACKGROUND:
Established in 1998 in collaboration with the
Buffalo Independent Secondary Schools Network (BISSNET)
More than 100 scholarships awarded to date for "Oishei
Scholars" to attend 16 local private secondary
schools
Annual scholarship support totaling over $505,000
ELIGIBILITY:
Applicants must be
accepted to the freshman class at one of BISSNET's
member schools
Applicants must be economically disadvantaged, minority candidates
Each school is required to select and nominate three
candidates, using a common application form
An individual applicant may be nominated by only one
school
PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION:
The program is jointly administered by the
Foundation, BISSNET and a committee of representatives
from the BISSNET schools
Scholarship recipients are selected by a separate,
independent Selection Committee consisting of community
representatives
appointed by the Foundation
BISSNET and Buffalo Prep work collaboratively to provide
ongoing program monitoring, including feedback from
participating schools, students and parents
