PURPOSE:

  • To offer economically disadvantaged, minority students nearly full four-year scholarships to private secondary schools in the Buffalo-Niagara region.
  • To increase the community outreach and diversity of local private secondary schools

BACKGROUND:

  • Established in 1998 in collaboration with the Buffalo Independent Secondary Schools Network (BISSNET)
  • More than 100 scholarships awarded to date for "Oishei Scholars" to attend 16 local private secondary schools
  • Annual scholarship support totaling over $505,000

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Applicants must be accepted to the freshman class at one of BISSNET's member schools
  • Applicants must be economically disadvantaged, minority candidates
  • Each school is required to select and nominate three candidates, using a common application form
  • An individual applicant may be nominated by only one school

PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION:

  • The program is jointly administered by the Foundation, BISSNET and a committee of representatives from the BISSNET schools
  • Scholarship recipients are selected by a separate, independent Selection Committee consisting of community representatives appointed by the Foundation
  • BISSNET and Buffalo Prep work collaboratively to provide ongoing program monitoring, including feedback from participating schools, students and parents

TIMETABLE:

  • Submission of candidates: March 1st, 2008
  • Announcement of winners: April 3rd, 2008
